Muhsin Hendricks, known as the world's first openly gay imam, has been shot dead near the town of Gqeberha in South Africa.

Hendricks, who led a mosque that provided a safe space for gay and marginalized Muslims, was in a car with another person when two masked suspects pulled up and opened fire. Hendricks, who was sitting in the back of the car, died at the scene from his injuries.

Police have launched an investigation and have confirmed that the murder may have been intentional, seeking information from those who may know something about the incident. The motives for the murder are still unknown, but the possibility of a hate crime is possible, according to reactions from LGBTQ+ organizations.

Hendricks had been a strong advocate for the rights of the LGBTQ+ community and had opened the Al-Ghurbaah Mosque in Wynberg, which provided a safe space for this community.

He was also the subject of a documentary titled “The Radical,” and has repeatedly mentioned the threats he has received. Hendricks came out as gay in 1996 and has helped LGBTQ+ Muslims by creating spaces where they can practice Islam without being judged.
