Serbian Interior Minister Ivica Dacic said on Saturday that a person has been arrested in the capital of North Macedonia on suspicion of war crimes in Kosovo in 1999.
He said the suspect, with the initials EB, born in 1970, was arrested by Interpol police at the request of Serbia, based on an international arrest warrant.
Macedonian media reported that he is a former member of the Kosovo Liberation Army from the municipality of Ferizaj.
Kosovo authorities have not commented.
Dacic said that the suspect, who was referred to as a “Serbian citizen,” is wanted by the Special Department for War Crimes of the High Court in Belgrade, “for the purpose of conducting criminal proceedings for crimes against civilians committed in June 1999 in the Municipality of Ferizaj.”
Serbia recognizes Kosovo citizens as part of Serbia, as it does not accept Kosovo's independence, declared in 2008.
The local police and the Public Prosecutor's Office for War Crimes have submitted all necessary documentation to the North Macedonian authorities, based on which the suspect has been ordered to be held in custody for 30 days, pending extradition, Dacic said./REL
