Russia-Ukraine War/ What was discussed at the first meeting between JD Vance and
JD Vance and Zelensky's meeting in Munich

US Vice President JD Vance said on Wednesday that Washington's goal is to reach a lasting peace agreement between Ukraine and Russia.

Vice President Vance made the comments after a one-on-one meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and before a meeting in the presence of delegations from both countries.

Vice President Vance was accompanied by Secretary of State Marco Rubio and President Trump's Special Envoy for Russia and Ukraine, Keith Kellogg.

"The goal is essentially, as President Trump has said, to end the war. We want to stop the killing, we want to achieve a lasting peace and not the kind of peace that would lead Eastern Europe into conflict just a few years later," said Mr. Vance.

Vice President Vance said he and Mr. Zelensky had a positive conversation about how they could achieve this goal, but he added that they would "provide more details in the coming days, weeks or months" on the matter.

For his part, Mr. Zelensky echoed Mr. Vance's comments.

"We had a positive conversation today, in our first meeting, which I am sure will not be the last," he said.

President Zelensky added that more work needs to be done to develop a plan that would end the war in Ukraine.

"We need to talk more, work more and prepare a plan to stop (Russian President Vladimir) Putin," Zelensky said after the meeting held in Munich, within the framework of the Security Conference.

Mr. Zelenskyy also said he is seeking "security guarantees" from the United States before any negotiations to end the war take place.

Asked by reporters where he saw progress in the negotiations if Mr. Zelensky was not ready to sit down for talks with Mr. Putin, Vice President Vance said:

"I think the way this conversation moves us forward is related first and foremost to the fact that we are sitting with excellent members of the Ukrainian delegation," Mr. Vance said.

"We have our extraordinary Secretary of State Marco Rubio here, General Kellogg. It's important that we come together and begin the talks that will be necessary to end this issue (end the war). That's all I can say for now, because I want to keep the options here for the negotiators and our teams responsible for closing this thing," he added.

Vice President Vance did not respond to a question about whether the United States had reached a minerals agreement with Ukraine or about the possible timeline for reaching it.
