Pope Francis was the one who, although in a wheelchair, began the ceremony on Tuesday evening by knocking several times on the Holy Door of St. Peter's Basilica.

The ceremony at the Vatican inaugurated the quarter-century tradition known as the jubilee.

The Jubilee is intended to be a period of reflection, reconciliation and renewal.

This year is often marked by a wide range of cultural and religious events, such as masses and concerts, and aims to inspire Catholic believers to undertake pilgrimages, repent, and forgive the sins of others.

The head of the Catholic Church dedicated this jubilee to the theme of hope.

“Sisters and brothers, this is the Jubilee. This is the season of hope in which we are invited to rediscover the joy of encountering the Lord. The Jubilee calls us to spiritual renewal and commits us to the transformation of our world, so that this year may truly become a time of joy,” Pope Francis said as he addressed those present at the Mass in St. Peter’s Basilica.

The Pope called on believers to restore hope to the world.

“We are called to bring hope to the afflicted who have no strength to continue, to the lonely crushed by the bitterness of failure, and to all those who are brokenhearted. Sow hope there, sow hope there. The Jubilee is now open for all people to receive hope.”

The Vatican leader will underscore this message of hope when he opens a holy door on Thursday at Rome's Rebibbia prison. The move is intended to inspire hope for a better future in the hearts of prisoners.
