The Danish government has announced a major increase in its defense spending in Greenland. The decision comes shortly after US President-elect Donald Trump reiterated his claims to buy the Arctic region.

Danish Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen said the package to strengthen Greenland's defenses amounted to about 1.6 billion euros, although the exact amount has not been determined.

The announcement came a day after Trump wrote on the social media platform that "for the purposes of national security and freedom throughout the world, the United States of America considers ownership and control of Greenland to be absolutely necessary."

To this statement by Trump, Greenland's Prime Minister, Mut Egende, responded, "We are not for sale."
