After US President-elect Donald Trump reiterated his demand to buy Greenland from Denmark, the reaction of the Greenlandic prime minister was immediate.
"Greenland is ours. We are not for sale and we will never be for sale. We must not lose our long fight for freedom," Greenland's Prime Minister, Múte Egede, said in a written statement.
On Sunday, Trump declared that for purposes of National Security and Freedom throughout the world, the United States of America believes that ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity.
Trump first took this stance in 2019. At the time, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederickson described the idea as "absurd."
As a result, Trump canceled a state trip to the country after these statements.
Greenland, the largest island in the world, is located between the Atlantic and Arctic oceans.
Eighty percent of the territory is covered by a layer of ice.
There is also a large American military base on the island.
