An American citizen has crossed the land border between South and North Korea, the US-led UN Command that oversees the area said on Tuesday.
The incident comes at a time when tensions over North Korea's nuclear program have intensified. The UN command announced on Twitter that the American citizen was making a tourist visit to the border village of Panmunjom and crossed the border into the North without authorization.
The release states that he is currently being held in custody in North Korea and that the UN Command is working with North Korean counterparts to resolve the incident. The command did not provide further details about who the person is, or why he crossed the border, but some US media outlets are reporting that he is US soldier Travis King.
According to the American media, he was going to be deported from North Korea for disciplinary reasons, but he managed to escape the guards and "willingly" crossed the border to North Korea.
North Korea's state media has not reported on the border incident.
The village of Panmunjom, located within the 248-kilometer demilitarized zone, has been jointly overseen by the UN Command and North Korea since the establishment of the zone at the end of the Korean War.
There have been occasional gun incidents, but the area has also been a place where talks have often been held, as well as being a popular tourist spot.
The village of Panmunjom has attracted visitors from both sides who want to see the last remaining frontier since the Cold War. There are no civilians living in this village.
