A group of German tourists have been accused of destroying a 150-year-old statue at a villa they rented in northern Italy.

Two German tourists climbed over the Domina statue in the middle of a fountain inside the villa, while a third pushed the statue with a crowbar, causing it to fall to the ground and break into several pieces.

The statue was made by artist Enrico Buti 150 years ago and was considered a very important attraction for the villa, said villa manager Bruno Golferini.

Villa "Alceo" is located in the town of Viju, near Varese.

He said the damage is estimated at around 200,<> euros, while restoration of the statue is almost impossible.

"Domina' was like a saint for the villa. "There are some idiots who do that," he said. The images of the vandalism were shared by the authors themselves who had posted them on social media.
