US President Donald Trump has threatened to declare the Strait of Hormuz "United States territory", in a statement made as diplomatic efforts to end the war with Iran remain at a standstill.

During a speech at a police academy in Long Island, New York, Trump declared that he would “very soon” designate the strait as American territory. He also claimed that the United States has imposed a blockade and that no ship can pass through the waterway without Washington’s approval.

"Once we finish defeating Iran, which is being defeated very badly, I will very soon declare the Strait of Hormuz territory of the United States," Trump declared.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world's most important maritime corridors. About a fifth of the world's seaborne oil supplies typically pass through it, making any disruption to shipping a direct threat to global energy markets.

The US president's statement comes at a time when negotiations with Iran have stalled. Tehran has refused to fully reopen the strait, which has been almost closed since the start of the conflict between the US, Israel and Iran.

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi reacted to Trump's statement via the X platform, saying that Iran will not be intimidated by American threats or displays of force. According to him, the decision to open or close the strait will be made solely by Iran.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi also stated that Tehran has not made a decision to resume negotiations with Washington. He said that the messages exchanged through Qatar and Pakistan do not constitute official negotiations.

According to Araqchi, talks with Oman have focused on defining a sea route through the Strait of Hormuz. Iran wants the US to meet certain conditions before maritime transport can resume normally.
