US increases pressure, urges Netanyahu to condemn Israeli settlers

The United States has urged Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to publicly condemn the actions of militant settlers who have been besieging Palestinians in their homes in the occupied West Bank for nearly a week.

According to a United States official and an Israeli official, the White House is pressuring Netanyahu to come out publicly against the settlers' actions, Reuters reports.

Tensions have been concentrated in the village of Qusra, where settlers have surrounded several homes for nearly a week, after cutting off water and electricity supplies, trapping Palestinians inside the area.

According to human rights groups, the actions are part of a coordinated effort by settlers to seize more land in a territory where Palestinians aim to establish their own state.

Washington's pressure intensified after US authorities learned that among the targeted homes was the home of a Palestinian-American, the two officials said on condition of anonymity.

On Thursday, the United States ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabee, used particularly harsh language towards settlers who have surrounded two Palestinian families in Qusra.

He described them as "Israeli terrorists," noting that the United States Embassy in Jerusalem had asked Israeli security forces to remove them from the area.

On Friday, settlers again put pressure on residents by erecting a new tent, which was removed after Israeli soldiers arrived.
