Russian provocations - NATO scrambles four fighter jets and shoots down drone

NATO scrambled four fighter jets and shot down a foreign drone that entered Latvian airspace on Friday morning, amid growing concerns about air incidents on the Alliance's eastern border.

The Latvian Ministry of Defense did not immediately identify the origin of the drone, but stated that it had entered the country's airspace "as a result of Russian electromagnetic warfare."

A senior Latvian official said the drone had not yet been found and that authorities would not rush to determine its origin.

According to NATO, the drone was shot down by an Italian Eurofighter jet. Another Italian plane and two Turkish fighter jets were also scrambled in response to the incident. The alliance has launched an investigation.

Russia has deployed systems for jamming and signal manipulation in its Western Military District, with the aim of disrupting long-range Ukrainian drones.

According to a Wall Street Journal report, this has led to several instances where Ukrainian drones have strayed and inadvertently entered the airspace of neighboring NATO countries.

Such incidents have become an almost weekly occurrence this summer, adding to concerns that Russia could test the Alliance's resolve through direct or indirect air interventions.

Baltic officials also fear that Moscow could use captured Ukrainian drones to stage a “false flag” attack. For this reason, security around national infrastructure, including power plants and natural gas facilities, has been increased.

Western military officials meanwhile warn that Russia is systematically using its drones to test Europe's air defenses.

Just a day before the incident in Latvia, NATO aircraft chased drones that had entered Romanian airspace near the border with Ukraine.
