France's Constitutional Court has blocked a law banning access to social networks for children under 15, deeming it contrary to constitutional guarantees, including freedom of expression.

In its ruling, the Court argues that implementing the ban would also force adults to prove their age to access online platforms.

According to her, the law did not clearly define the conditions and limits of this verification, failing to provide sufficient legal guarantees for the protection of fundamental rights.

The law was passed by the French Parliament and aimed to ban the use of social networks by minors under the age of 15. France would become the first European country with such a restriction, after Australia, which in December 2025 banned access to some platforms for minors under the age of 16.

The Elysee Palace has announced that President Emmanuel Macron remains determined that the reform will enter into force before the spring of 2027, so he has ordered the prime minister to review the draft law and include the judges' concerns.
