US President Donald Trump will impose new tariffs on Canada, Mexico and China tomorrow, the White House said, asserting that he will stick to his February 1 deadline for new tariffs that could have widespread effects on the economy.
"I can confirm that tomorrow, the February 1 deadline set by President Trump in a statement a few weeks ago continues," White House press secretary Caroline Leavitt said during Friday's briefing.
Her confirmation of the new tariffs seemed to end speculation about whether Trump would follow through on the promise he made as a candidate.
She said the tariffs would reach 25% for Mexico and Canada and a 10% tariff for China "for the illegal fentanyl that they have received and allowed to be distributed in our country, which has killed tens of millions of Americans."
"These are promises made and promises kept by the president," she said.
Leavitt declined to provide additional details on the new tariffs, including whether they would apply to oil imports or whether additional exemptions would be included.
