The Secretary General of NATO, Jens Stoltenberg, described the situation in Kosovo as "very disturbing" after the events of September 24 in the village of Banjské in Zveçan, as he guaranteed that the NATO Forces in Kosovo (KFOR) will protect peace in the region.
This is what Stoltenberg said in an interview for the German newspaper "Elt".
"The situation in Kosovo is a cause for great concern", Stoltenberg said a few days before the meeting of NATO defense ministers in Brussels.
"I want to say very clearly: NATO troops are ready to maintain peace in Kosovo. We will not allow the violence of the 1990s to return", he emphasized.
Stoltenberg requested that Kosovo and Serbia should return to the dialogue mediated by the EU.
"This is the only way to achieve lasting peace for all communities."
In response to the unrest, the UK increased the KFOR peacekeeping force, which has been led by NATO since 1999, from its current strength of around 4,500 soldiers to 200 troops.
