The US House of Representatives overwhelmingly approved a bill that could lead to the illegal declaration of the Chinese social network TikTok for about 170 million users across the US territory.
The draft law forces the owner of "TikTok", the Chinese company ByteDance, within six months to give up the shares, selling them in the USA.
The bill passed with 352 votes in favor and 65 votes against, with bipartisan support, and will now go to the Senate.
This is the first time the US has passed a bill to outlaw a web application.
The fear of many US lawmakers, who see TikTok as a national security threat, is that the Chinese regime could seek access to the data of US TikTok users or somehow force the app to promote the Chinese agenda.
TikTok has repeatedly claimed that the Chinese government has never made such requests (and that TikTok would not comply with those requests if they were made).
