The White House says it has decided to supply the Ukrainian army with cluster munitions.

A senior American official told Reuters on condition of anonymity that a package of ammunition is already ready and can be sent this Friday to Ukraine. The new armaments also include cluster munitions that can be fired by 155mm artillery.

Human rights groups have opposed the deployment of this type of ammunition as it is considered "non-discriminatory" on the battlefield.

Cluster munitions are mainly projectiles that explode in the air and disperse into hundreds of pieces targeting a large area. Often, the use of these weapons in Syria caused the death of innocent civilians.

Cluster munitions are banned by more than 120 countries. But for Ukraine this is good news, which could give a boost to the counter-offensive against the Russian forces. Ukrainian officials have stated that these munitions will be used in areas where there is no civilian population.

This aid package for Ukraine is worth 800 million dollars, while since the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, it is estimated that the US has spent 40 billion dollars in aid.
