The solar engineering program being developed by Harvard University is funded by Bill Gates. Now a White House report has given the green light to the scientific study, which has been debated for years.

It is about a controversial scientific project called solar geo-engineering. The project, in essence, studies the latest weapon against climate change.

Among its most prominent financiers is Bill Gates. For years he has spent money and time figuring out how to counteract the effects of human impact on the environment.

Recently, even the White House has given a timid consent to carry out this experiment.

A Politico article states that US President Joe Biden's administration is open to studying the possibility that changing solar radiation could contribute to the cooling of the planet.

There is no lack of skepticism or caution in dealing with a topic that is already controversial. In the same article it is written that "there are no plans to create a global research program".

In practice, this project, which is being carried out by a team of scientists from Harvard University, plans to modify solar radiation.

There is much division among scientists about this study known as the Stratospheric Controlled Perturbation Experiment (SCoPEx).

A technique called SRM (Solar Radiation Management) is used to block the reflection of the sun's rays before they reach the earth's atmosphere.

The hypothesis is that this could contribute to slowing down global warming.

And to do that, scientists want to develop a form of SRM known as Stratospheric Aerosol Injection.

As stated in a document by the Etc Group, an association that monitors the impact of new technologies on biodiversity, "it plans to spray a solution of water, gypsum and sulfur particles into the atmosphere through a balloon flying at high altitude".

This substance should generate clouds that will block sunlight in the upper atmosphere.

But the most controversial part of solar geoengineering lies in the fact that the possible side effects of such an action on the environment are not yet known.

According to the Harvard scientists, at least in the experimental phase, "the amounts released by the project will be very small compared to other routine releases of material into the stratosphere by aircraft, rockets or routine balloon flights."

But an important point is that there is awareness of the risks.

What SCoPEx is proposing is to "reduce uncertainty about specific scientific issues by performing quantitative measurements of aerosol microphysics and atmospheric chemistry needed to assess the risks and benefits of solar geoengineering in large-scale atmospheric models."

Protagonisti i vërtetë i SCoPEx quhet David Keith.

"Guided by the precautionary principle, the EU will support international efforts to comprehensively assess the risks and uncertainties of climate action, including the modification of solar radiation," says a document signed by the European Parliament and Council.

And that "it will stimulate discussions on a possible international framework for its governance, including aspects related to research". / Corriere della Sera
