The President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, has accused Kosovo of carrying out "silent ethnic cleansing" of Serbs and said that his country will request a meeting with the head of NATO as well as an urgent session of the Security Council of the United Nations. United to seek their protection.

"Things are out of control," declared Vucic, adding that "Serbs are very worried."

He said he would seek an urgent meeting with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg before seeking an emergency session on the issue at the UN Security Council.

Serbia may initiate undefined difficult "actions" if both initiatives do not yield results, he warned.

"We have no right to allow further massacre, persecution or ethnic cleansing of our people," said Vucic.

Earlier, Serbia had placed the army on alert on the border with Kosovo, as tensions had risen sharply between Serbs in northern Kosovo and local authorities. However, it is unclear which are the episodes that Vucic refers to as "ethnic cleansing", since on the other hand, the Kosovo authorities accuse Belgrade of serious provocations, up to arming the Serbs in the north of the country.

Vucic said that this alleged ethnic cleansing of Serbs in Kosovo is "planned and well thought out".

Tensions between Serbia and Kosovo reached their peak when Serbian special forces breached the border line and kidnapped three members of the Kosovo police in the North of Mitrovica.

Only after successive international pressures, Vucic was convinced to order their release.

Today, the Serbian president also attacked the member of parliament of Great Britain, Alicia Kearns, saying that he will request the initiation of an investigation against her. Kearns is among the first to denounce the arming of Serbs in the north of Kosovo, with ambulances and civilian cars from Belgrade.

Vucic's strong statements come at a time when Prime Minister Edi Rama is in Pristina and is expected to arrive in Belgrade the day after tomorrow, as part of the Balkan tour. According to the agenda, Rama will be received on Friday by Vucic, with whom he will then hold a press conference and a working dinner.
