The Princess of Wales, Kate, is suffering from cancer and is currently undergoing chemotherapy. The announcement was made in a video by Kate herself.

Kate underwent abdominal surgery two months ago, the causes of which were not clarified. At first, however, the royal family denied it was cancer.

“I want to take this opportunity to personally thank you for all your amazing messages of support and understanding during this time as I recover from surgery. The last two months have been very difficult for our family, but the medical team that is looking after me is fantastic and I am grateful. I had abdominal surgery in January and at the time was thought to be cancer free. The operation went well, but the tests - after the operation - revealed that I had cancer," says Kate in the video.

"The doctors advised me to do preventive chemotherapy and now I am in the early stages of this type of treatment."

"This news is obviously a huge shock and William and I are trying to do everything we can to manage my condition privately for the sake of our new family. As you can imagine, this took me a while. Time to recover from surgery, time to start treatment. And above all time to explain everything to our children, in a way that they understand and to reassure them that I will be fine again."

"As I explained to them: I'm fine, I'm getting stronger, day by day, and I'm focusing on what will help me recover."

"William's presence is a great source of comfort and security. As is the love, support and kindness shown by so many of you. It all means a lot to both of us. We hope you understand that, as a family, we need time, space and privacy until I complete treatment."

"My work," says Kate, "has always brought me a deep sense of joy and I look forward to returning when I am able to do so, but for now I must focus on my full recovery. At this time I also think to all those whose lives have been touched by cancer. To all those who face this disease, in any form, do not lose faith and hope. You are not alone."
