The preparation of the New Democracy ballot for the European elections in Greece is proceeding at an intense pace.

The official unveiling will take place immediately after the party conference at a special event that will take place between April 10 and 15.

New Democracy has announced the first 28 names of candidates for the European elections on June 9. One of them is the Olympic champion Pirro Dhima, the President of the World Weightlifting Federation.

Pirro Dhima is the former weightlifter who caused a stir with the statements about his origin. In an earlier interview, he caused many reactions from both sides of the border. "I am a Greek born in Albania". It was this answer that Pirro Dhima gave to the Greek journalist Elena Akrita, who called him of Albanian origin.

To clarify the debate, but also the period he spent in Albania until he left for Greece, Pirro Dhima spoke in a long interview for one of the neighboring country's media.

"I am Greek, born in Albania, in Himara from my grandfather to my grandfather from my mother and father", he explains. "This is my honor and my pride," he continued, then stopping at the interview that caused a stir.

"Mrs. Akrita wrote an article in my favor and I thank her for her kind words. But not of Albanian origin! I am Greek from grandfather to grandfather. I have no connection with the Albanians", he said at that time.
