The bitter news of the death of legendary actor Gene Hackam shocked the film world yesterday.

He and his wife Betsy Arakawa, as well as their dog, were found dead in their home in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Their deaths have been described as "suspicious" by the investigation team.

Calling the police

At the same time, the telephone conversation between the employee who found the bodies and police authorities was made public.

In a telephone call, the employee is heard describing the scene while looking through a window.

Asked “are they conscious?” by the authorities, he answers anxiously: “No, no, no. They’re not moving. Send someone here quickly.”

Doubts

The two-time Oscar winner's daughter, Elizabeth Jean Hackman, said the family suspects carbon monoxide poisoning.

According to reports, they had been dead for more than a day and it took investigators 12 hours to identify the bodies.

Foreign media report that the bodies were already in the decomposition stage and that the couple is believed to have been dead for about two weeks.

It turns out that the neighbors hadn't seen them for about two weeks, which further supports these theories.

The Daily Mail reports that a police warrant indicates that the bodies of the actor and his wife were partially "mummified" when they were found, and an open bottle of prescription medication was found near the woman's body. It is not yet known exactly what the medication was.

The couple's bodies were found in different rooms of the house.

Betsy Arakawa was found in a bathroom on the first floor, lying on her right side.

While the actor was found in a separate room near the kitchen, fully dressed and wearing sunglasses.

Investigators believe it is possible that the actor collapsed before his death.

Although their daughter suspects carbon monoxide poisoning, firefighters reported finding no signs of a gas leak.

“The deaths of two individuals are sufficiently suspicious to warrant a full investigation, as the neighbor found the front door of the home unsecured and open,” the search warrant states.

The couple had three dogs, one of which had died. Investigators found the German shepherd's body in a closet near the bathroom, not far from Betsy's body.

The other two dogs were found alive, one standing next to Betsy, while the other wandered around the yard.

Investigators say the front door of the home was open, but they found no signs of a break-in.

What surprised the authorities?

Calling for a "full investigation," officials in the statement cited a number of things that surprised investigators: the open front door, the heater on the bathroom floor, the open bottle with scattered pills, the presence of two live dogs and a third that was dead, the fact that Hackman was in a separate room from his wife, and that there were no visible signs of a gas leak.

After finding the couple, authorities searched the rest of the property and found nothing else, the statement said.

All other buildings on the property and the garage were locked and there was no indication that the house had been the victim of a burglary.

Although there was no clear indication of a criminal incident, investigators are not ruling out any leads.
