A member of the Russian state news agency was granted access to the Oval Office to cover US President Donald Trump's meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, while the AP and Reuters were barred from the high-level meeting.
A correspondent for TASS, a Russian state media organization, was among a carefully selected group of journalists present in the Oval Office for the leaders' meeting, which is part of U.S. efforts to end Russia's war in Ukraine.
Although the group of journalists in the Oval Office was carefully selected, the White House has denied rumors that it allowed the TASS journalist access.
"TASS was not on the approved media list for today's group," a White House official told CNN in a statement. "As soon as it was realized by the press office staff that he was in the Oval Office, he was escorted out by the Press Secretary."
"He is not on the approved list for the press conference," the official said.
This event comes three days after the White House announced that it would undo the selection of the group's journalists by the White House Correspondents' Association, breaking a decades-old precedent.
Caroline Leavitt, the White House press secretary, promoted the move as democratic, stressing that the WHCA "should no longer have a monopoly on the privilege of press access to the White House."
Despite assurances from the White House that the TASS correspondent was not approved, the presence of the staff in the Oval Office highlights a significant breach of protocol by the White House, CNN reports. While the White House takes control of the list of journalists, the presence of the TASS staff represents a potential security lapse on the part of the White House.
Although a member of Russia's state news agency was allowed access to the Oval Office, albeit allegedly by accident, staffers stressed that the Associated Press and Reuters were not allowed to sit in on the talks.
