The moment when the police interrupt the British "dream" of 45

The British media has published footage of the dramatic moment when the French police prevented an attempt by a group of 45 migrants to cross the English Channel, puncturing their boat and breaking their engine.

Just after sunset on Saturday evening, in the sleepy resort of Gravelines, between Calais and Dunkirk, migrants wearing red life jackets emerged from the sand dunes and launched their dinghy ashore.

Several women and men carried small children in their arms, while a large group of mostly young men followed behind, carrying a black raft over their heads. But they were caught by a police car which raced along the beach, with officers brandishing knives to pierce the dinghy as the migrants quickly dispersed.

One of them dropped to his knees in despair, his hands covering his face as an officer appeared to use spray as well. Police then smashed the outboard motor with a sledgehammer and bewildered holidaymakers looked on as the migrants desperately trudged back to hide among the dunes.

No arrests have been made by French police, but the crackdown came on a day when 10 small boats carrying 337 migrants successfully set off from French shores and reached the UK.
