French President Emmanuel Macron has tried to downplay a video showing his wife, Brigitte Macron, punching him in the face as they arrive in Vietnam, sparking backlash on social media after the couple's tour of Southeast Asia began.
In the video, which has gone viral, Brigitte is seen hitting her husband just before he steps off the presidential plane on Sunday evening. Macron takes a step back, clearly startled, before regaining his composure and greeting the cameras waiting for him on the tarmac. Meanwhile, Brigitte stands for a moment behind the plane door, avoiding appearing right in front of the cameras, likely to avoid revealing more than she wanted through her body language. The couple, married since 2007, eventually walked down the steps of the plane together, with Brigitte avoiding holding Macron's hand.
When asked about the incident, Emmanuel Macron tried to portray it as an innocent incident between spouses. "Maybe we were joking, as I often do with my wife, and suddenly this video was presented as a global catastrophe," he said. "In the world we live in, we don't have time to deal with such things," he added.
Speaking to French television network BFMTV, the French president denied there had been any "family scenes" and spoke of exaggerated reactions: "This is all a bit absurd. People are saying a lot of nonsense. Everyone should relax."
Macron stressed that this is not the first time that the content of the video in which he appears has been misinterpreted, referring to previous scenes from his trip with Friedrich Merz and Keir Starmer by train to Kiev, which were also widely commented on in the media.
Macron's visit to Vietnam, the first by a French president in almost a decade, takes on particular significance as it is part of Paris' efforts to strengthen its presence and influence in Southeast Asia, and particularly in a former French colony.
