Trump accepts Von der Leyen's request: 50% customs tariffs on EU suspended

There is an improvement in relations between the European Union and the United States on the hot front of customs tariffs. Ursula von der Leyen warns about this. And a little later Trump confirms it, announcing the postponement of the suspension of 50% tariffs until July 9.

In the evening, von der Leyen, president of the European Commission, publishes a message on the X platform. “Excellent call with President Trump. The EU and the United States share the most important and closest trade relationship in the world,” she writes. And she adds: “Europe is ready to move the talks forward quickly and decisively. To reach a good agreement, we need the necessary time until July 9.”

A few hours later, on the social network Truth, comes Trump's positive response to the request of the European Commission president: "I received a call from von der Leyen asking me for an extension of the June 1 deadline for the 50% tariffs regarding trade and the European Union. I said yes to the extension, which is set for July 9, 2025. It was a privilege for me to do this". Trump also describes the call as "very friendly" and adds that the negotiating teams "will meet soon to see if a solution can be found".

When negotiations between Brussels and Washington were at a standstill, Trump threatened to impose general tariffs of 50% on European products. A threat that, on Friday, caused panic among European investors, ultimately burning 183 billion euros. Today, after the US president's decision to freeze tariffs, world stock markets can breathe a sigh of relief.

Relations between the EU and the White House seem to be heading towards a truce. A truce that was also desired yesterday, at the Trento Economy Festival, by the president of Confindustria, Emanuele Orsini. “When a statement by the US president ‘burns’ billions on the stock market, I hope that this clash ends with a handshake,” declared Orsini, referring to the stock market earthquake. It is necessary to “act quickly on tariffs, because a trade war” — if it lasts — “generates uncertainty. There is a gap in the negotiations that can be overcome.”

Areas for an agreement? Energy and arms purchases by the United States and big tech companies. Orsini added that the excess bureaucracy on our continent is like an “internal tariff” that hits both European and international companies interested in operating within our borders. It is time for “simplification”.

In general, the head of Italian industry hoped for a change of course from Brussels. "I believe that the European system can give a lot", provided that it knows how to change. In a context of economic conflicts, with other parts of the world moving "fast", the EU risks being "squeezed". In building responses for industry, Brussels "is not at all fast. We therefore risk losing competitiveness". / La Repubblica
