Less than a week after his family warned he was "on the verge of death," former US Marine Robert Gilman has been released by Russian authorities and is returning to the United States with his mother.
Gilman, who had been in prison in Russia for more than four years, was reportedly in critical condition and unresponsive while being fed through a tube.
His release was made through a humanitarian pardon ordered by Russian President Vladimir Putin, after intensive diplomatic efforts by the Donald Trump administration.
Unlike previous agreements between Moscow and Washington, there was no prisoner exchange in this case and Russia received no official compensation. US officials described the release as a "humanitarian gesture".
President Donald Trump announced the release via Truth Social and said he had spoken to Gilman while he was on the plane leaving Russia.
According to Trump, the former Marine's first request was a cheeseburger, which the president said he would personally make sure he got.
Gilman's case had caused great concern about his treatment while in detention and Russian prisons.
The human rights organization and Global Reach, which had supported his family, claimed that he had experienced prolonged abuse, harsh conditions and was forced to take medication.
As his condition deteriorated, Gilman was transferred from a detention facility to the psychiatric ward of a civilian hospital.
There he was described as having fallen into a state of "dissociative stupor," where the person is largely insensitive to the surrounding environment.
His mother traveled to Russia to meet her son, but was reportedly not allowed into the hospital where he was being treated. The two were finally reunited aboard the plane returning Gilman to the US.
The 32-year-old is expected to undergo an extensive series of medical examinations and a rehabilitation program at a military hospital in Texas.
Gilman was arrested in 2022 after an incident on a train in Voronezh. Russian authorities accused him of assaulting a police officer while under the influence of alcohol.
His family has insisted that the incident was accidental and occurred after Gilman felt unwell. According to the family, the officer was not injured and did not seek criminal prosecution.
Gilman was initially sentenced to four and a half years in prison, but his sentence was later extended after additional charges of assaulting prison employees.
His family and organizations that supported him have disputed these charges, arguing that they are related to the abuse and deterioration of his condition during his time in detention.
His sister, Lexi Hudson, welcomed the release and attributed it to Trump's intervention. She also accused Russian authorities of serious abuse of her brother.
The US State Department stated that it hopes that Gilman's release will help create conditions for the release of other Americans imprisoned in Russia, including Stephen Hubbard, who is also considered unjustly detained by US officials.
