Putin threatens Russia with retaliation if EU countries seize Russian ships

Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Wednesday that Russia will respond in kind if European countries seize Russian merchant ships, state news agency TASS reported.

The comments come as the EU intensifies pressure on Russia's so-called shadow fleet, expanding sanctions against hundreds of ships and detaining several vessels and their crews for checks.

Several European governments have said they are considering tougher maritime measures against ships suspected of evading sanctions.

TASS quoted Putin as saying of these measures: “Of course, this is nothing but piracy and banditry. And if this is put into practice, we will be forced to respond in kind.”

He said, according to TASS, that any Russian retaliatory action would not be limited to those waters where the Russian ships were seized, but "would take place wherever we deem necessary and appropriate."

Putin spoke from Russia's Sakhalin island in the far east, where he is observing military exercises. TASS also quoted him as accusing NATO of interfering in the Asia-Pacific region and creating tensions in the Arctic.

"NATO is making advances in the region, new military-political blocs are being formed, and new weapons systems that pose a threat to Russia are being deployed or are planned to be deployed," he was quoted as saying.
