The political leader of Hamas, Ismail Haniyeh, has reacted for the first time after an Israeli attack killed his three sons.

Haniyeh said killing the leaders' sons would only make the group "more steadfast in our principles and adherence to our land".

His three sons were killed in an Israeli airstrike in Gaza on Wednesday, a killing that threatens to complicate negotiations aimed at securing a ceasefire and hostage deal between the parties.

Haniyeh emphasized that Hamas will not back down from their demands, despite such acts.

"Anyone who thinks that targeting my children during negotiation talks and before an agreement is reached that will force Hamas to back down from its demands is delusional," Haniyeh said in a statement.

The Israeli military confirmed it carried out the attack and described the men as "three Hamas military operatives carrying out terrorist activities in the central Gaza Strip".

According to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and the Israel Security Agency (ISA), those killed were Amir Haniyeh, a cell commander in Hamas' military wing, and Hamas military operatives Mohammad Haniyeh and Hazem Haniyeh.

All three were killed when the vehicle they were traveling in was bombed in Al Shati refugee camp, northwest of Gaza City, Hamas political leader Haniyeh told Al Jazeera.

At least three of Haniyeh's grandchildren were also killed, as well as the driver, according to a journalist working for CNN in Gaza.
