French producer Nicolas Altmayer, co-founder of the successful production company Mandarin & Compagnie, and his wife, Mathilde Favier, a longtime executive at Dior, died in a car accident in France on August 17, at the ages of 61 and 56.

The accident happened on Monday in the Deux-Sèvres region in western France. According to the Niort prosecutor's office, their car collided with a heavy transport vehicle traveling in the opposite direction.

Their deaths have shocked the French film and fashion industries.

Altmayer founded Mandarin & Compagnie (formerly known as Mandarin Production) with his brother, Eric Altmayer, in 1996. Since then, the company has produced more than 70 feature films.

Altmayer's best-known works include James Huth's successful comedy "Brice De Nice"; Michel Hazanavicius's "OSS 117"; Roschdy Zem's "Chocolat"; and Rémi Bezançon's "The First Day Of the Rest Of Your Life."

He also produced several films by director François Ozon, including “Young & Beautiful” and “By The Grace Of God,” as well as Bertrand Bonello’s film “Saint Laurent.”

Mandarin & Compagnie continued its collaboration with Bonello for the upcoming dramatic thriller Santo Subito!, set in the Vatican and starring Mark Ruffalo and Charlotte Rampling.

Recent projects include the box office success “Molière, Cyrano And The Young King”; Safy Nebbou's film “Nobody's Son” starring Romain Duris; and Mehdi Idir's biographical film “Monsieur Aznavour”.

In 2017, Nicolas and Eric Altmayer jointly received the “Daniel Toscan du Plantier” award from France's “César” Academy, which recognizes the producer of the year.

Favier was head of public relations (PR) at the LVMH group and a long-time executive at Dior Couture. She was considered one of the most respected figures and had the widest network of contacts in the fashion industry.
