Israeli tourist arrested in Greece for causing massive fire in Crete

A serious incident has rocked the island of Crete, where a 35-year-old Israeli tourist was arrested over the weekend after allegedly lighting a barbecue in the yard of a rented villa, causing a massive forest fire.

According to Greek media, the tourist's indifference to rules and public safety has put the lives of residents and the wealth of an entire region at risk.

According to local media reports and preliminary investigations by the Fire Service, the incident occurred on Friday at 19:11, near the village of Sellia, close to the tourist area of Plakias in the municipality of Agios Vasileios.

The villa owner had been very clear, warning guests upon arrival that, due to the high risk of arson and strong winds, the use of barbecues was strictly prohibited.

These instructions were even given to them in writing. But despite the danger and warnings, the tourist and his group decided to ignore the rules and sparks from the barbecue, aided by strong winds, fell on the dry grass around and spread the flames with frightening speed to the surrounding area.

This act put hundreds of emergency forces into motion, with over 60 firefighters, three special forest fire units, dozens of vehicles, firefighting helicopters, water tankers, and volunteers mobilized on the ground.

Meanwhile, through the national emergency system "112", an alarm was raised and the preventive evacuation of residents and tourists in the communities of Fotinari and Souda was ordered, allowing firefighters to bring the situation under control after about four hours.

This incident occurs at a very sensitive time for Greece, which is facing a catastrophic fire season, after just two weeks ago the same region of Rethymno was devastated by one of the worst fires of the summer.

In that case, about 45,000 acres of land were burned in two days, over 8,000 residents and tourists were forced to urgently evacuate, and two firefighters lost their lives in the line of duty while battling flames fueled by winds reaching up to 100 kilometers per hour.

Faced with the grave consequences of these tragedies, Greek authorities have established a zero-tolerance policy towards any violation of fire prevention rules, where on high-risk days lighting barbecues, burning plant waste or any activity that produces sparks is strictly illegal and punishable by hefty fines and criminal prosecution.

The 35-year-old tourist is expected to face serious legal consequences for his actions.
