The tourist area of Halkidiki in Greece has been engulfed by a massive fire approaching residential areas on the coast. Greek authorities have announced through the 112 system the urgent evacuation of all residents and tourists in the Siviri area.
According to the Civil Protection announcement, people in Siviri have been instructed to move towards Mola Kaliva and follow the instructions of the authorities.
The flames have spread rapidly through an area of pine forests and dense vegetation, aided by strong winds. Residents have been evacuated from the danger zone by sea, while roads are busy with traffic due to diversions from the fire.
Local authorities have described the situation as very difficult. The fire front has spread to both sides of the road connecting Siviri with the Kassandra area. 52 firefighters with 12 vehicles have been deployed to extinguish the fire, while three aircraft and a helicopter are intervening from the air.
Greece is one of the countries hardest hit by wildfires as a result of the heatwave. Just days after a deadly blaze in the Attica region was brought under control, around 200 firefighters are battling new fires southeast of Athens. At least five firefighters have reportedly lost their lives in recent days trying to put out the flames.
