Germany is recording more and more flights of unidentified drones, with the number of incidents now reaching hundreds, according to the Bundeswehr.
A representative of the German military's Operational Command stated that reports of drones began to increase significantly after the start of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, and have recently become even more frequent.
"The number of reports of drone sightings linked to the Bundeswehr has increased significantly and remains at a stable level," the representative stated.
According to the Bundeswehr, most of the cases involve single drones. However, the military has also recorded cases where entire swarms of drones have been detected.
The Operational Command did not provide details on the individual incidents or the circumstances in which the aircraft were identified.
Drones, however, constitute only part of the broader security concerns facing Germany.
According to the Bundeswehr, the country faces various forms of hybrid threats every day, including disinformation, fake news, cyberattacks, espionage and sabotage.
The German military has not directly linked the registered drone flights to any particular country.
One of the most recent incidents occurred at Leipzig Airport on the evening of August 5, when operations were temporarily suspended after a suspicious drone with explosives was found near the runway. It was located next to a Ukrainian Antonov An-124 transport plane.
Investigators later found an antenna near the scene of the incident, as well as DNA traces on the drone and on explosives. They said the drone had been specially modified for the attack.
Authorities are also investigating a possible Russian connection, but the Bundeswehr has not directly attributed the recorded drone incidents to Russia.
