A serious event took place on the island of Tinos yesterday, a 3-year-old boy died after allegedly choking on grapes.

He breathed his last at the Health Center after being transported with a blocked airway from a grape he had swallowed.

It was 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday when the child's father realized that the child could not breathe after eating the grapes.

Not having time to react, he took his son and sent him to the island's Police Station, which is located near the family's house.

There, the police, who have knowledge of first aid, tried to resuscitate him by removing two grapes from his mouth, but the child was not breathing.

They immediately put the 3-year-old in the patrol car and took him to the island's Health Center, where the doctors managed to remove another piece of grape.

As the president of the Tinos Health Center explains to protothema.gr: "Unfortunately, a valuable time has passed. In these cases what is done must be done in the first 4 minutes. He came to us at 9:02 am. He came to the health center without breathing.

He had a pulse, but could not be saved despite the efforts of the doctors, pediatrician, cardiologist and two village doctors.

They removed one grain from his throat, but there was another, embedded at the level of the trachea that could not come out. Rescue efforts were already made by the Police, who are trained in first aid. They took out two grapes but he still wasn't breathing ," says Mr. Vassilakis.

The dead body of the unfortunate child was transported by ship to Piraeus , to undergo an autopsy, while the Tinos Police are conducting preliminary investigations into the causes of the tragedy.
