Why is Elon Musk buying Twitter? The answer to this question lies in what he can do with your data
The purchase of one of the largest social networks in the world by a single billionaire has worried not only governments, but also human rights scholars and groups.
They fear the sheer amount of data Musk will have, as well as how much he will stick to commitments to allow freedom of speech.
"Freedom of speech is the cornerstone of functioning democracies, and Twitter is the square of the digital town where vital issues are being debated over the future of humanity," Musk said Monday shortly after reaching an agreement.
In principle, freedom of speech is a good thing, but in social networks the situation is quite different.
In recent years, Twitter and other parent companies of social networks, have taken more seriously the spread of misinformation and calls that incite violent acts.
For example, Twitter expelled former US President Donald Trump on the grounds that he had disseminated false information which led to the attack on protesters on Capitol Hill, in January last year.
Today, many think Musk could bring Trump back to Twitter.
"The concentration of wealth, money and power in the hands of a minority has always been the enemy of democracy and the fact that one of the richest people on the planet has taken over Twitter should worry everyone," Diego Naranjo, chief of staff, told Euronews. Policies in the European Digital Rights Association.
Benefits of personal data
In addition to his vision to turn Twitter into a free speech platform, Musk may need platforms for his other companies as well.
Social network users are at the mercy of algorithms, which absorb their preferences to keep them on their sites as long as possible, thus generating more revenue through advertising.
And Musk knows this well, he added, as he has worked before and is familiar with vehicle rules in Europe.
"However, we need to be vigilant about the fact that as these platforms grow, they become even more threatening to our privacy, data protection and our democracies in general."
