Denmark to transfer 300 prisoners to Kosovo early next year

Denmark and Kosovo have sealed the agreement under which 300 people serving sentences in Danish prisons will be transferred to suffer it in Kosovo.

The countries agreed in December, where Denmark rents 300 cells from Kosovo prisons for an annual fee of 15ml euros.

"We have now signed an agreement that will provide better capacity in our overcrowded prisons and ease pressure on our prison officers" Denmark's Justice Minister Nick Haekkerup said in a statement.

The prisoners will be sent to a prison in the city of Kumanovo starting next year.

Under the agreement, foreign prisoners will be deported after suffering the sentence.

Denmark's prison population grew by nearly 20 percent since 2015 to reach more than 4,000 incarcerated people in early 2021, putting the prison capacity rate above 100 percent, according to official data. In the same period, the number of guards fell by 18 percent.

It is not the first time Denmark, which has one of Europe's toughest positions on immigration, plans to transfer foreign management beyond the borders of the European Union.

In June, the country passed a law allowing the opening of reception centres for asylum seekers outside Europe, where applicants would live until their case is processed, just as great Britain recently did by opening asylum centres in Rwanda.
