Ecuadorian police have seized 469 kilograms of cocaine near the border with Colombia, while hundreds of drug packages bore a photo of Norwegian football star Erling Haaland.
The quantity of drugs was discovered in a truck traveling on the Pan-American Highway, following a tip-off received by police. The cocaine was hidden in a modified compartment of the vehicle, where authorities found 370 packages of the narcotic substance.
The truck driver and a woman, identified as María R., who had Colombian documents, were arrested during the operation. The use of images of famous people on drug packages is not an unknown practice for trafficking networks. Images of football players or other public figures can be used to identify the cargo, criminal groups, their origin or destination.
According to authorities, the seized cargo is valued at around $842,000 in Ecuador's domestic market, while its value would reach more than $11 million in the US and around $19.6 million in Europe.
There is no evidence linking Haaland to the drug shipment. The Norwegian footballer was only used as an image on the seized packages.
Ecuador continues to face a serious problem of drug trafficking and organized crime, as the country serves as an important transit point for cocaine produced mainly in Colombia and Peru and destined for the North American and European markets.
Ecuadorian police have seized around 80 tons of drugs during the first half of 2026 alone, while around 215 tons were seized during 2025 and around 295 tons in 2024.
Haaland's image appears to have been used by traffickers at a time when the Norwegian forward has received international attention following his performances at the World Cup. Authorities have previously found drug packages with images of famous footballers, including Argentina captain Lionel Messi.
