Israel has announced it will file a legal complaint against the American newspaper The New York Times, regarding an article published by journalist Nick Kristof, which dealt with allegations of sexual abuse of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli prisons.

According to a statement by Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman Oren Marmorstein, the content of the article is considered by Israeli authorities to be unverified and potentially defamatory, damaging the image of the Israeli state and its security institutions. Tel Aviv has emphasized that the government is evaluating legal steps that can be taken against the American media in connection with this publication.

The issue is related to an opinion piece, where Kristof raised concerns over reports and allegations alleging mistreatment of Palestinian detainees in several detention facilities in Israel.

These claims have sparked strong diplomatic and political reactions, reopening the international debate over the treatment of prisoners in the Israeli-Palestinian war.

For its part, the Israeli side has categorically rejected the accusations, describing them as unfounded and emphasizing that its legal and military systems operate according to international standards.

"We will fight these lies both in the court of public opinion and in court. The truth will triumph," said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

However, he did not provide details on where and when the lawsuit might be filed. This is not the first time Netanyahu has threatened legal action against the American newspaper.

Even in August of last year, he had threatened to sue The New York Times for an article that addressed the issue of hunger in Gaza, but it did not materialize.
