The meeting between US President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping ended after about 2 hours and 15 minutes, lasting approximately 35 minutes longer than their last meeting in Busan, South Korea, last October.
After concluding the bilateral talks, the two leaders visited the Temple of Heaven in Beijing, one of China's most popular tourist attractions.
This magnificent architectural complex, built in 1420, is particularly known for the Hall of Prayer for the Full Harvest, a circular wooden building with a three-dimensional roof covered in blue tiles.
Trump is the first sitting US president to visit the country since Gerald Ford's visit in 1975. In Chinese tradition, the Temple of Heaven symbolizes harmony between heaven and humanity, and for nearly 5 centuries, emperors used it for rituals and prayers for bountiful harvests.
Details known so far from the meeting
The meeting took place behind closed doors and the White House has not yet issued any official statement.
However, Chinese state news agency Xinhua reports that Xi Jinping has told Donald Trump that, if the Taiwan issue is not properly handled, the US and China risk "clash and even conflict, putting the entire relationship at serious risk."
"Taiwan independence and peace in the Taiwan Strait are as incompatible as fire and water. Maintaining peace and stability in this area is the greatest common ground between China and the United States," the Chinese leader declared.
This statement reportedly came after comments at the start of the meeting in the Great Hall of the People, where Trump expressed his appreciation for Xi, telling him: You are a great leader, it is an honor to be your friend!
On the other hand, Xi Jinping reportedly struck a tougher tone at the start of the meeting. He said that history and the world are asking whether the two countries can overcome the "Thucydides Trap" and create a new model of great-power relations, the Associated Press reports.
According to him, relations between the two countries should be based on cooperation and not rivalry, emphasizing that "common interests outweigh differences" and that stability between the US and China is indispensable for the world. Xi has underlined that this year could be a key moment for bilateral relations.
Meanwhile, according to Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning, Xi also spoke about the countries' trade relations, stating that "economic teams have produced generally balanced and positive results, for both peoples and the world."
"The two sides should jointly maintain this good momentum that we have worked hard to create," Xi added, as Ning wrote in a post on X.
Other global issues, including Iran and stability in the Middle East, were also discussed. However, it is not yet known whether the parties have reached any concrete agreements.
The site had been closed to tourists in the days leading up to the Trump-Xi summit, in anticipation of the presidential visit. In a sign of preparations for the visit, a previously dilapidated section of road near the north gate was repaired overnight. Meanwhile, Elon Musk traveled to China with Trump this week, despite ongoing litigation over his lawsuit against OpenAI and a federal judge’s order that he be available to return to testify at any time.
