One of the bosses of the Camorra, Francesco Schiavone, whom Italian investigators believe is keeping important secrets of the Neapolitan mafia world, has repented after 26 years behind bars.

Known as "Sandokan", the head of the Casalesi clan has begun to cooperate with the magistrates after almost 3 decades in prison.

Schiavone was arrested in 1998 and sentenced to life imprisonment in the "Spartacus" trial, where he was found guilty of several crimes.

In 2018, his son Nikola was the first in the family to announce his repentance and cooperate with justice. In 2021, the second son of the family, Walter, also decided to cooperate. His other two sons, Emanuele Libero, who will be released from prison next August, and Carmine remain in prison.

In recent days, the police went to Casal di Principe to propose relatives of the leader of the clan, including his son Ivanhoe, to enter the state protection program, confirming the readiness of "Sandokan" to cooperate with prosecutors from Naples .

Francesco Schiavone's decision may be an intended message to the outside world, giving up on reorganizing his mafia clan and placing a tombstone on the aspirations of other potential successors.

Francesco Schiavone's cooperation with justice is the hope of the judges to shed light on some unsolved mysteries, such as the murder in Brazil in 1988 of the founder of the Antonio Bardellino clan, or on the links between the Camorra and politics in Italy.

Married to Giuseppina Nappa, he has six children with her (four sons and two daughters), the last two on the run. Now 70 years old, he has adopted the nickname Sandokan, due to his resemblance to Kabir Bedi, the actor of the popular TV series.
