Pilgrimage bus falls from 50 meters in South Africa, 45 dead, only one

45 people have died in South Africa after the bus they were traveling in fell about 50 meters from a bridge into a valley, authorities say. An 8-year-old girl, the only survivor, was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. The bus caught fire when it crashed into the ground in the northeastern Limpopo province.

The passengers were pilgrims traveling from Botswana's capital Gaborone for an Easter service in Moria. The vehicle lost control and went off the bridge at the Mmamatlakala mountain pass between Mokopane and Marken, about 300km north of Johannesburg, according to South Africa's public broadcaster SABC.

Transport Minister Sindisiwe Chikunga, who went to the scene, expressed her "heartfelt condolences to the families affected by the tragic bus crash". She said the South African government would help repatriate the bodies and conduct a full investigation into the cause of the crash.
