The EP vice-president admits: the EU made a mistake with the measures against
Catherine Bareley

The vice-president of the European Parliament breaks down the reasons why Brussels is "stroking" Aleksandar Vucic so much.

"The EU does not want to lose Serbia to Russia or China. But what is the price of inhibition?", asks Katarina Bareley in an interview with the German media Frankfurter Rundschau.

The senior official of the European Parliament emphasizes that "Putin and China are getting closer to the Balkans", as she warns that "the compromises between the EU and the autocrats will eventually turn into a boomerang".

Bareley says that enlargement is an opportunity to promote peace and freedom in Europe and does not hesitate to criticize Brussels for favoring Serbia over Kosovo, bringing a concrete example.

"In the dispute between Serbia and Kosovo last September, the European Commission unilaterally imposed sanctions only against Kosovo. By doing so, this institution sends conflicting signals."

The German media has also received the opinion of the doctor of political sciences, the Austrian Vedran Džihić, who also strongly criticizes the European Commission, which is turning a blind eye to the authoritarian behavior of Vučić.

The analyst says with concern that Brussels is bringing a second Viktor Orban to the bloc, who is not punished even though he steals the elections. The expert calls for more tough decisions from the EU towards Serbia, as he considers Vučić a politician close to Russia in many aspects, including governance.

The formula of the Austrian political scientist is that Brussels should support Kosovo more and other countries that make real efforts for membership.
