Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel has given her first public speech this year, breaking the silence on the Russian occupation of Ukraine.

In her first speech in six months, former German Chancellor Angela Merkel called Russia's attack on Ukraine a violation of international law and a "profound turning point" in post-World War II European history.

"My solidarity with Ukraine, which has been attacked and occupied by Russia, is in support of its right to self-defense," Merkel said Wednesday night.

She said she supported the efforts of the current German government, the European Union, the United States, NATO, the G7 and the UN to ensure an end to the "barbaric war and aggression of Russia".

Merkel spoke in front of two hundred guests at a ceremony for Reiner Hoffmann, who recently resigned as head of the influential Confederation of German Trade Unions.

She stressed that the consequences of the war will be far-reaching, especially for Ukraine, but also for the entire continent.

Merkel also referred to atrocities against civilians, citing Bucha, a place near Kiev where hundreds of civilians were found dead.

She called the small support offered to Ukrainians by neighboring countries a small glimmer of hope in this "endless grief", citing Poland and Moldova as examples.

"We must never take peace and freedom for granted," she said.

Merkel has been criticized for her efforts to engage with Vladimir Putin during her 16-year tenure, particularly for accepting the Nord Stream 2 pipeline. The pipeline project was finally suspended by her successor Olaf Scholz, two days before the Russian occupation. .
