Gilberto Rodríguez Orejuela, the oldest boss of the Cali cartel and a sworn rival of Pablo Escobar has died in an American prison, his lawyer said on Wednesday.

Known by his nickname "Shahisti", the 83-year-old is accused of helping set up the Cali cartel, which once controlled 80% of the global cocaine market, according to a report by the DEA. The family plans to repatriate him to Colombia.

The arrest of Rodriguez Orejuela by Colombian authorities in 1995 marked the beginning of the dissolution of the Cali cartel, which had smuggled large quantities of cocaine from Colombia to the United States in the 1980s and 1990s.

He was extradited to the United States in 2004 and was serving his sentence in a federal prison in Butner, North Carolina. In 2020, a judge denied parole. His lawyer said at the time that the former drug king was suffering from a range of health problems.

Rodríguez Orejuela and his brother, Miguel, built a large criminal enterprise that fought with Pablo Escobar and his allies the Medellín cartel for control of drug trafficking. Unlike Escobar, who launched an open war against Colombian authorities and security forces, the Cali cartel focused most of its activity on criminal operations.

They also accepted funding for political campaigns, including the 1994 candidacy of Liberal Party President Ernesto Samper, who denied any knowledge of the donations at the time.

The Rodríguez Orejuela brothers were arrested in 1995 and sentenced to 15 years in prison. At the time, Colombian law prohibited the extradition of its nationals, but under U.S. pressure, Colombia lifted that ban in 1997.

However, in 2002, Rodríguez Orejuela was suddenly released from prison following a controversial court ruling, but he was arrested again in 2003.

It was later revealed that the brothers had continued trafficking from prison to which criminal charges were filed in Miami and New York. In 2004 Gilberto was extradited while Miguel was extradited a year later.
