Efforts to resolve diplomatically the maritime border dispute between Turkey and Greece are at an all-time low. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced before the country's parliament the end of talks with the Greek side, launched last year.

Erdogan said Wednesday that the country is suspending talks with Greece, in part because of a dispute with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and what Ankara calls airspace violations.

Last year, after a five-year hiatus, the two NATO members resumed talks on resolving problems in the Mediterranean and other bilateral issues.

Erdogan told parliament that Turkey had canceled a platform for bilateral co-operation with Greece, called the High-Level Strategic Council, adding that Ankara wanted a foreign policy that "has a strong character".

"You are constantly telling us (the opposite) with your planes," he said, referring to the airspace dispute over islands in the Aegean Sea.

He warned Greece not to try to play with Turkey. "Do not play games with Turkey because you will get tired and you will be left on the streets. "We are no longer holding bilateral talks with you," said the Turkish president.

Countries have long been at odds over a range of issues such as maritime borders, overlapping claims around their continental belts, airspace, migrants and ethnically divided Cyprus.

Tensions erupted again last week when Erdogan said the Greek prime minister "no longer exists" for him, accusing him of trying to block the sale of F-16 fighter jets to Turkey during a visit to the United States.

Mitsotakis said on Tuesday, after a summit of European Union leaders, that he had briefed EU colleagues on Turkey's "aggressiveness" and "provocations that Greece or the EU can not tolerate."
