German Chancellor Olaf Scholz announced today that his country will help Ukraine with Soviet-era tanks owned by Greece. Berlin will replace Athens with Soviet tanks with new German-made tanks.

Scholz said he had spoken with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis about such an agreement.

Berlin has made a similar deal with a number of countries that have Soviet-era tanks that can be used by Ukrainian soldiers immediately after training.

Germany has reached such agreements with Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Poland, reports the BBC.

Germany is also training Ukrainian soldiers for modern heavy weapons, which will then be delivered to Ukraine.

German ministers say Berlin is sending too many weapons to Ukraine, contradicting the impression other countries have that Germany is not doing enough. But some key ministers and politicians within the government acknowledge that deliveries are slower and more complicated than originally expected. There is growing pressure in Germany to make deliveries faster, more transparent and more organized.

Meanwhile, Russian forces have taken control of half the city of Sievierodonetsk in eastern Ukraine.

"The city is being ruthlessly destroyed block by block," Mayor Oleksandr Striuk told the Associated Press.

He said fierce fighting on the city streets continues and the bombings threaten the lives of about 13,000 civilians who are still sheltered in the devastated city that before the war had more than 100,000 inhabitants.

The mayor says it is impossible to determine exactly how many civilian casualties there have been due to the incessant bombing, but he believes more than 1,500 residents have died from various causes since the start of Russian aggression in late February.

Evacuation efforts have been halted due to the bombing.

Electricity in the city has been cut off and people need water, food and medicine, the mayor said.

Taking control of Sievierodonetsk is important for Russian efforts to take over the Donbas region.

The Moscow-backed separatists have controlled part of the territory in the region since before the aggression and have been fighting Ukrainian troops for eight years.

Sievierodonetsku is in the last area that remains under the control of the Ukrainian government in the Luhansk region.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the situation in Donbas remains "extremely difficult" as Russia is exercising "maximum combat power" of its military in that region.
