A real tragedy in Texas. At least 46 people have been found dead in an abandoned truck on the outskirts of San Antonio. 16 of them, including four children, were taken to hospital. Survivors suffered from heat stroke and fatigue, the BBC reports.
"They had families and were trying to find a better life," said San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg. "It's a terrible human tragedy."
San Antonio Fire Chief Charles Hood told reporters that "we should not open a truck and see bundles of bodies. None of us come to work imagining this," he said.
He added that the vehicle, which had been abandoned by his driver, had no air conditioning and no drinking water inside.
Three people are being held in custody and the investigation has been handed over to federal agents.
San Antonio, which is 250 km (150 miles) from the U.S.-Mexico border, is a major transit route for human traffickers. Human traffickers often use trucks to transport undocumented immigrants, passing them through the United States.
