A magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck off the coast of Indonesia, near the island of Flores. The quake struck on Friday, August 14, at 9:58 p.m., at a depth of 10 feet.
The epicenter was located 68 kilometers from the town of Ende, in East Nusa Tenggara province, on the island of Flores.
In the coastal area, dozens of buildings were destroyed or damaged. During the night, the death toll rose by the hour. According to reports, the number of victims is “at least 20”. “The first two reported victims were a man and a woman, then other deaths were confirmed,” Berton Suar Pelita Panjaitan, a spokesman for the agency responsible for disaster management, told the media in Jakarta. “We will officially announce the final number of victims and the extent of damage to buildings caused by the earthquake as soon as we have the data.”
A tsunami warning was also issued in the early hours, but was later cancelled. Indonesian authorities had also issued an evacuation order, with Abdul Muhar, another official from the same agency, saying: "We strongly urge our communities along the northern coast of Flores and in the southern areas to immediately evacuate."
Residents were asked to “remove from the coast, moving more than two kilometers inland or going to hilly areas over 10 meters high.” However, the tsunami alert was lifted about 5 hours later.
