A "witch hunt" is taking place in Bulqiza, in the state-owned chrome mine, which was granted a concession and is recently administered by a Turkish company. VoxNews has been reporting on a series of scandals that are happening with the wealth of Albanians, which is being barbarically exploited, while the companies, owners and directors are already getting rich, at the expense of poor and exhausted workers, even killed, as serious incidents are reported every week in the state-owned mine area.
A very painful story, as the state seems to only get crumbs from all that wealth, with the concessionaire company reporting a loss of up to 720 thousand euros last year. A terrible abuse, as the enterprises and buildings are state-owned, built with the sweat and blood of workers who once belonged to the state. But, as with every other asset throughout Albania, Bulqiza has a history that has only inflated the accounts and pockets of the owners and directors.
After a series of reports, starting with the Ferrochrome Plant in Burrel, or even with the Bulqiza mine, the concessionaire company has started to make a "scapegoat". A few days ago, VoxNews reported on dismissals and appointments to several management positions at ALBCHROME. In the meantime, in these lines we will focus on the administration of the main mine, where hundreds of workers work, who have been demanding the most dignified treatment for years.
But, immediately after the workers' demands, the company's reaction came. In a decision also announced by VoxNews, the Turks have dismissed director Mikel Demçe, returning to the position of mine director Medat Zogu. The latter has been director before, even in very dark times, where he was accused of shameful treatment of workers. Zogu left as director only after the hunger strike that the miners held about 13 years ago.
His return to the head of the mine seems to be a scheme for the Turks to leave. In this way, they are trying to create dissatisfaction among the miners, where initially they will attempt massive cuts in staff, despite the fact that everyone has seniority and a signed contract. The first demands have been made, where director Medat Zogu has on the table a decision to lay off dozens of female employees, from those who select the extracted chrome. Most of these women miners are from the most needy class of Bulqiza, some have lost their husbands in the mine, others have sick family members, etc.
The Turks seem to be asking no one, while their goal seems to be only extortion and not the most dignified treatment of the miners, or even the property of the Albanians. It is learned that the partner of the firm Sabit Sagir, in his capacity as administrator, is acting with an iron fist, holding meeting after meeting in Tirana or even in Bulqiza.
He dismissed the director Mikel Demçe and appointed Medat Zogu, a 66-year-old pensioner, in the “quality of local administrator of the company at the Bulqizë Chromium Plant, for a term of 5 years from the date of this decision”. Mr. Ruzhdi Domi was also appointed, in the quality of local administrator of the company at the Elbasan Ferrochromium Plant, for a term of 5 years.
The VoxNews editorial office has received a series of complaints about the events at the state-owned chrome mine in Bulqiza. Despite the fact that the concessionaire company, now in Turkish hands, has dismissed several directors, it seems that "the fish stinks from the head."
The history of chrome in Bulqiza is the same as the Patos-Marinëz oil field, the ARMO processing enterprise, the copper, iron and nickel mines, or other oil or gas fields throughout Albania.
The data published by our editorial team shows that the senior executives of the concessionaire firm ALBCHROME, as well as the administrators of several factories, have seriously abused the management of this property, which is "owned" by the Albanians themselves and not by those who manage it or those (central government officials) who have granted permission.
In fact, the concessionaire firm operated with two balance sheets, making the situation extremely suspicious, "copying" its sister company Bankers in this case.
According to documents researched by VoxNews, in 2024 the concessionaire firm Albchrome recorded a loss of 720 thousand euros. Naturally, several questions arise; Where does the chrome money go in Albania? Is it possible that a balance sheet with a loss is made in order not to pay obligations? How much have the costs been inflated, by paying subcontractors, in order to issue this balance sheet? What salaries do the administrators, directors, managers and those who manage this wealth of Albanians have?
Of course, the controlling institutions, but also the law enforcement ones, must act with the aim of stopping this terrible abuse. If in every country in the world the mines bring income for the state, the workers, the community or even for the company that manages them, it is completely different in Albania. They all end up with losses!
But if they don't make a profit, why keep them?
