In an American newspaper of June 17, 1922 we find a statement of the Minister of Interior Ahmet Zogu for the Associated Press news agency. Zogu was only 27 years old at the time and was seen as an ardent supporter of America's recognition of Albania.

"If America recognizes us and sends a diplomatic representative to Albania," said Zogu, "this will be the biggest impetus that can be given to Albania."

"We are an ancient and proud race. We have traditions since before the era of Christianity. We have suffered under the hoof of the tyrant. We have been oppressed by both Asian and European peoples. We have dreamed for centuries for freedom. "We are the most homogeneous race in the Balkans and we passionately want the opportunity to decide our own destiny."
