Former president Ilir Meta said that he will try to make possible the practice of the referendum in Albania. Meta said that: the referendum will be the sword of Damocles, over all politicians and those who abuse the people and those who have delayed integration.
But let's go back a bit in history, the famous sword of Damocles dates back to an ancient popular proverb of the Roman philosopher Cicero in his book of 45 BC " Rebuke of Tusculans ".
Cicero's version of the story focuses on Dionysus II, a tyrant king who once ruled the Sicilian city of Syracuse.
But what was the sword of 'Democles'?
Dionysus, although rich and powerful, was not happy. His rule had made him many enemies, and he was tormented by the fear of being killed. He was so afraid that he slept in a room surrounded by a moat and trusted only his daughters to shave his beard with a razor.
The king's displeasure came one day after a flatterer named Democles began to compliment him and point out how happy his life could be. " Since you like my life ," replied Dionysus in annoyance, " do you want to try yourself and then judge my good fortune ?".
When Democles agreed, Dionysus seated him on a golden bed and ordered several servants to welcome him. He was served good food and anointed with many perfumes. Democles could not believe his luck, but just as he began to enjoy life as king, he noticed that Dionysus had also hung a sharp sword from the ceiling. It was positioned above the head of Damocles and was held only by a strand of horse hair.
The fear that gripped Democles made it impossible for him to enjoy wealth and servants. After throwing a few nervous glances at the sword hanging above him, he asked to be released, saying that he didn't want to be so lucky again.
Why does Meta's comparison with this proverb not hold?
According to Meta's comparison, the king 'Dionysus' is thought to be Rama, but unlike him, the prime minister of Albania is not tired of power but wants more.
He still does not have a sword that will strike him to get him out of politics. If the former president Ilir Meta thinks that it is the sword of Damocles, then he should return to Rama's servile and compliment him on the power he has and the life he leads.
Cicero's definition:
The tale of Dionysus and Damocles represents the idea that people in power always labor under the specter of anxiety and death, and there can be no happiness for someone who is under constant constraints.
One of its most famous uses came in 1961 during the Cold War, when President John F. Kennedy gave a speech to the United Nations in which he said that " Every man, woman and child lives under a nuclear sword of Democletus ".
